What we do

Supporting children, young people, and their whānau to navigate through tough times by building resilient individuals and communities.

We support people of all ages throughout New Zealand who are experiencing grief, loss, trauma and change.

The Skylight Resource Centre offers a wide range of specialist information about the different ways change, loss, trauma and grief can affect people. Please visit the Skylight Resilience Hub to access a range of free online resources, search our library catalogue and visit our shop. You can also request a free resource pack tailored to your individual needs, or the needs of someone you are supporting.

Skylight has counsellors in Wellington, Lower Hutt, Porirua, Kāpiti Coast, Auckland, Thames and Christchurch. Online counselling is also available.

We provide counselling services for people going through difficult times in life. The fee for a one hour counselling session is $120 please contact the Counselling Coordinator to explore the options. The range of issues we could support you with include:

  • Grief and bereavement (including bereavement by suicide or homicide)
  • Trauma (including witnessing a traumatic event)
  • Family break up and adjusting to blended families
  • Behavioural issues (anger in children, bullying, ASD)
  • Illness and anticipated death
  • Domestic Violence
  • Broken relationships
  • Injury or disability
  • Disaster aftermath

We provide programmes in schools to help build resilience in children and facilitate support groups for people going through different types of loss. Read about the Travellers Programme for Year 9 students, which is running in schools across New Zealand.

If you are a survivor of sexual violence, Skylight can help you access advocacy services run by Louise Nicholas. Louise Nicholas and the Sexual Violence Survivor Advocate team help survivors of sexual violence to:

  • navigate New Zealand's complicated court and social services system, when survivors feel vulnerable and hurt
  • influence and change the system through legislation and government policy, and by changing community attitudes.
