My work in domestic violence began 20 years ago as National Campaigns and Fundraising Manager for the National Collective of Independent Women’s Refuges. To understand the work of the Refuges better, I became a volunteer at Wellington Women’s Refuge and then qualified as a court approved facilitator for men’s and women’s programmes.
During my time as coordinator of the network it has been a privilege to work alongside many dedicated people doing amazing work in the family violence sector. I enjoy our monthly meetings where we can all get together and support and learn from each other. One day I will retire but I will always advocate against all forms of domestic violence and on behalf of the amazing women and children who live with it. |
Children are present at about 80% of all violent incidents in New Zealand homes. 1 in 3 women experience violence from their partner in their lifetime.
Family violence is estimated to cost the country between $4.1 and 7 billion dollars each year.
