Shakti Community CouncilWhat we doShakti was established Auckland in 1995 and its Wellington Centre was opened in 2009. Shakti will endeavour to support and assist ethnic women experiencing domestic violence in all possible ways. We provide culturally appropriate services to women and children family violence victims from Asian, Middle Eastern and African communities. Interpreting services are provided for Shakti clients.
Shakti offers free group/individual Ministry of Justice approved safety programmes for women victims/child victims of family violence. The Strengthening Safety Services (SSS) are for women who do not have a Protection Order and Supporting Safety (SS) for those who have Protection Orders. The SS Programme is also available for children covered under a Protection Order. If required, we can refer clients to our counsellors, who have an understanding of client culture, family violence and are appropriately qualified and trained. Shakti Youth is a branch of Shakti Community Council that works towards empowering all migrant and refugee youth in Aotearoa/New Zealand to live lives with dignity, free from violence and fear, and to help create safer homes and communities together. Shakti Youth Network for Change (SYNC) is a leadership development programme, aimed at increasing access to support services for vulnerable youth populations. We endeavour to give young people the platform and resources to break intergenerational cycle of violence. The programme will include a combination of youth development workshops, community events and discussions, and engagement with migrant and refugee-dense high schools.
