Birthright

What we do

Birthright Wellington puts the family/whānau at the centre of everything we do. We have a 60-plus year deep understanding of the challenges of raising a family alone. We work alongside whānau offering home based social work support and counselling that recognises the unique and special needs of whānau/caregivers/guardians that are parenting alone.

We believe that all tamariki and young people that are led by one person are entitled to the same “birth right”: - A good start in life, help in times of crisis and the opportunity to reach their full potential.

Birthright Wellington provides a range of holistic support to parents/caregivers/guardians raising tamariki and young people alone.  This support ranges from professional social work and counselling support helping whānau work through the barriers they face and to live with hope and aspiration; connection with others in the community; to learn new skills; about food insecurity, and provision of basic clothing and household goods as well as facilitating programmes and advocacy.

By providing basic needs, information, budgeting, resources and advocacy, we can ensure that we are putting building blocks in place towards improving health, safety, well-being and resiliency.

We ensure that immediate issues i.e., lack of food, accommodation, unsafe relationships or parenting issues are identified and prioritized.
Birthright Wellington provides confidential, individualised information and support for those affected by family violence/harm.

Specific services and practical assistance are offered to whānau in the context of their personal aspirations and goals, and at a time and in a form that is relevant to them.

Our services are free. we accept both agency referrals and self-referrals.
