Birthright

What we do

Birthright Wellington is a not-for-profit Social Services agency dedicated to the well-being of children and young people that are led by one person.   Our mission is to promote “resilient, inspired families”.  Birthright Wellington has been active in the Wellington area since 1955.

Birthright Wellington provides a number of programmes and services that aim to improve the well-being of children and young people and to support parents to be the very best they can be.  We work alongside families offering advocacy work, goal setting plans, home-based social work support, family living skills, parenting programmes, life skills programmes, children and young people’s self-esteem programmes.

Birthrights aim is to facilitate the growth of confidence, development of living skills and a sense of well-being within the family unit.  We believe that all children and young people that are led by one person are entitled to the same “birth right”: - a good start in life, help in times of crisis and the opportunity to reach their full potential.

Our method is to help the family to plan for their own future, to use effectively their own community resources and to achieve integration into the community. Specific services and practical assistance are offered to the family in the context of their personal aspirations and goals, and at a time and in a form, that is relevant to them.

Birthright Wellington provides confidential, individualised information and support for those affected by family violence, such as safety and future planning. With children as our primary focus, we help parents understand and address the impact of violence for all family members, and, where needed, we help organise specialist support, such as counselling. Birthright works closely with many community and government agencies in Wellington so that that our families get all of the support and services possible.

Our services are free; we accept both agency referrals and self-referrals.
