What we do
Skylight is a national not for profit trust that enables children, young people, their family/whanau and friends to navigate through times of trauma, loss and grief, including domestic violence. Skylight facilitates family/whanau to access expert information, education, professional services including counselling and support.
Skylight has counsellors in Wellington, Lower Hutt, Porirua, Masterton and Auckland. Some of the issues the counsellors support family/whanau through include: family break-up, domestic violence, bereavement (including after a suicide), family member with illness or disability, parent with a mental health issue and/or addiction.
The Skylight Counsellors are approved to facilitate the Ministry of Justice funded Domestic Violence Children’s Supporting Safety Programme for individual children and young people and/or sibling groups who have witnessed domestic violence. To apply to Family Court for this programme there needs to be a protection order.
Skylight also provides counselling for children and young people and families/whanau affected by domestic violence when there is not a protection order in place, please ask about the possible funding options as there is a fee for this counselling.
The Skylight Resource Centre provides support information through free tailored support packs for specific situations, posted out to anyone, anywhere in New Zealand.
The Skylight Library is a free service available for loaning books, DVDs and games across the country. Skylight also has an online shop selling Skylight publications.
Skylight also educates, trains and supports professionals, agencies and individuals who assist those dealing with trauma, loss, and grief.
See skylight.org.nz for more information on all of these services.
