Shakti Community Council
What we do
Shakti was established Auckland in 1995 and its Wellington Centre was opened in 2009. It offers multifarious, culturally-appropriate services to migrant and refugee communities and advocates for Asian, African and Middle Eastern women and children who are affected by domestic violence.
Culturally appropriate support takes into account the home country’s socio-cultural dynamics and various issues such as dowry abuse, the low status accorded to women, the deep-rooted effects of patriarchy, religious and political contexts that contribute to domestic violence and the subjugation of women within that particular ethnic community.
The culturally appropriate services that Shakti Wellington provides will go a long way in ensuring that women of Asian, African and Middle Eastern origin and their children, who are a further disadvantaged group due to the additional barriers to accessing support that they face, will be provided with the support they need to lead lives of dignity that are free from violence.
